Two roads lead to adding remote access to a gate opener that didn’t ship with it. One adds hardware from a third-party vendor on top of whatever board you already have. The other installs a module the opener’s own manufacturer sells. Both put an app on your phone. Neither is obviously the right choice for every install.
The decision turns on three things: how old the board is, which brand made it, and how much you care about what happens when the vendor’s cloud has a bad night.
What aftermarket retrofits are
An aftermarket retrofit is a small device that wires to the dry-contact or relay terminals on your gate’s control board. It sits in the middle: your Wi-Fi network on one side, the opener’s trigger input on the other. When you tap “open” in the app, the device closes a relay for a fraction of a second—the same trigger a wired clicker sends.
The three retrofits that come up most often in driveway gate installs:
Remootio Gen 3. An Austrian device. It connects to the gate board via two wires and communicates over Bluetooth (local range, roughly 65 feet) and Wi-Fi for remote access. Remootio operates its own cloud service; the company has been in the market since 2018. The Gen 3 hardware runs around $179 and carries no monthly fee. It supports dual-gate installations and logs open/close events.
iSmartGate Pro. A similar two-wire bridge with broader third-party integration support—IFTTT, Zapier, and some Google Home and HomeKit paths. Can control up to three gates from a single unit. No subscription. Price runs roughly $129. Originally from a South African developer, it has a wide US installer base.
ratgdo. An open-source ESP8266/ESP32 board that connects to LiftMaster and Chamberlain Security+ 2.0 garage door openers via the wired serial bus (the same three-wire interface used by keypads and wall consoles). It sends native protocol commands rather than dry-contact triggers, which gives it deeper status reporting—door position, obstruction, and travel detection—without any cloud dependency if you run ESPHome on Home Assistant. Cost is under $50 for the board plus components. Hard limit: ratgdo was designed for residential garage door openers. It does not document compatibility with standalone driveway gate operators (LiftMaster CSW24UL, SL595UL, or equivalent commercial-grade boards).
The defining trait across all three: they work on almost any board that exposes dry-contact inputs. A Remootio doesn’t care whether it’s wired to a Nice Apollo, a DoorKing 1830, or a 2006 LiftMaster slide operator.
What OEM smart modules are
An OEM smart module plugs into an expansion port or terminal group that the opener manufacturer built specifically for it. The board and the module share firmware; the module reads native device state rather than inferring it from relay triggers.
LiftMaster 841LM. An 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi board that adds myQ connectivity to any LiftMaster or Chamberlain control board with a Security+ 2.0 accessory header. Required firmware revision: Logic Board 2.0 or later, which covers most boards manufactured from roughly 2015 onward. Street price is around $80. The integration is deep—myQ reports door position, photoeye faults, and limit-switch states. It does not work on older fixed-code or rolling-code boards that predate Security+ 2.0.
Nice MyNice Welcome. A proprietary expansion module that clips into compatible Nice and Apollo control boards. Enables the MyNice app, Amazon Alexa and Google Home voice commands, and a timed auto-close feature. Requires a board with a dedicated expansion slot—older Nice boards lack this slot entirely. The module uses Nice’s cloud infrastructure.
DoorKing Smart Connect. A Wi-Fi bridge designed specifically for DoorKing 1830-series boards. Enables monitoring and control via DoorKing’s app. Common in gated residential communities where DoorKing hardware is already standard.
The structural advantage of OEM modules: the board and the module were engineered together. Status reporting, safety interlock behavior, and firmware updates travel through a single vendor relationship.

Where retrofits have the edge
Older and non-US boards. A retrofit runs on any board with dry-contact inputs, including 20-year-old Nice Apollo hardware and imported European operators that no US manufacturer sells a module for.
Cross-brand installs. If two gates at a property run different brands, one Remootio can control both. OEM modules are brand-locked.
No vendor lock-in. If a retrofit company closes, you unplug the device and wire in a replacement without touching the gate board. The gate itself is unaffected. For OEM modules, the cloud is built into the board’s firmware—if the service ends, so does remote access.
Subscription-free. Remootio and iSmartGate do not charge a monthly fee. LiftMaster dropped the myQ subscription in 2023, but the history of that category is instructive. Our breakdown of which gate apps charge and which don’t tracks the current state.
Where OEM modules have the edge
Native diagnostics. The LiftMaster 841LM reads the board’s sensor bus. A photoeye misalignment, a limit-switch fault, or an unexpected mid-travel stop surfaces in the myQ app with event timestamps. An aftermarket retrofit sees only “the relay closed”—it has no insight into why the gate stopped moving.
Firmware update coherence. When LiftMaster ships a Security+ 2.0 firmware patch, the 841LM module updates alongside the board. Aftermarket firmware versions are independent and sometimes lag by months.
Single-vendor accountability. If an OEM module behaves unexpectedly, one call reaches the manufacturer. When a retrofit causes an unusual behavior—a relay that doesn’t release cleanly, for instance—you’re debugging across two separate product lines.
Warranty protection. Some manufacturers explicitly void control board coverage if a third-party device is wired into relay terminals. Verify with your installer before adding any aftermarket hardware to a board still under warranty.
The thing neither does
Both paths keep the access trigger on your phone. Open the app, tap a button, wait. That’s a 3–8 second round trip if the connection is clean; longer when the app reconnects to cloud.
Neither a retrofit nor an OEM module reads your car’s position as you approach and opens the gate before you arrive. That requires a credential attached to the vehicle—something that signals the opener from the driveway, not from your pocket.

How to choose
