2. Universal or compatible remotes

Multi-Code, Linear, and similar third-party remote makers sell remotes that work across a range of older openers using fixed-code protocols.

Fixed-code systems were standard through the 1990s and into the early 2000s. If your opener predates rolling-code technology, a universal remote will pair. If your opener uses Security+ 2.0, Intellicode, or any other rolling-code protocol — which covers most gates installed after roughly 2005 — a universal remote won’t work.

4. Keypad or card reader at the gate

A PIN-code keypad or proximity card reader mounted at the gate entrance gives access without any carried device. Guests can use a PIN without needing a copy of the remote. Most residential gate openers include dry-contact terminals on the control board; a keypad or card reader wires to those two terminals and triggers the gate the same way a push button does.

Best for: Properties that need repeatable guest access or households where managing physical remotes across multiple people is the core problem.

5. Phone-based smart controllers
