Before you train HomeLink: confirm the original remote works on the gate
HomeLink copies a working remote signal. It cannot program itself to a receiver the remote hasn’t already been trained to. If the TOPENS remote doesn’t open the gate, HomeLink will simply copy a signal the receiver ignores.
To train the TOPENS remote to the receiver if you haven’t done so yet:

Step 1 — Choose a HomeLink button. Most vehicles have three HomeLink buttons, built into the overhead console, visor, or rearview mirror. Pick one you want assigned to the TOPENS gate. If you need to erase a previously stored code on that button, most systems allow clearing all three buttons simultaneously by holding the two outer HomeLink buttons until the LED flashes rapidly (approximately 20 seconds). Step 4 — Watch the HomeLink LED. The LED will begin flashing slowly, then transition to a rapid flash. That change from slow to fast indicates HomeLink has captured the code. Release both buttons immediately when rapid flash begins — holding longer can cycle the system past the capture point.

When pairing does not complete
HomeLink flashes slowly for 30 seconds and never shifts to rapid flash.
This is the most common failure, and it has three likely causes:
- Low remote battery. Replace the battery before retrying.
- Remote positioned too far from HomeLink, or held at an angle. Try 1-2 inches, transmitter face-to-face with the HomeLink button.
- Frequency mismatch. TOPENS remotes operate at 433.92 MHz. Older HomeLink implementations — typically found in vehicles manufactured before 2009 — supported 288–390 MHz only. This means HomeLink captured a code the receiver doesn’t recognize. The almost universal cause: the original remote was not pre-trained to the TOPENS receiver before the HomeLink training step.
