Which Grand Cherokee trims have HomeLink
HomeLink arrives as part of the auto-dimming rearview mirror package, not as a standalone feature. On the WL generation (2022 and newer), trims that include the auto-dimming mirror carry HomeLink; the base Laredo omits that mirror package and therefore HomeLink. On WK2-generation Grand Cherokees (2011–2021), the split was similar — Limited and above typically carried it, Sport trims did not.
The quickest hardware check: look at the underside of the rearview mirror housing near the windshield mount. Three small recessed circular buttons in a row along the bottom edge mean HomeLink is installed. No buttons means that trim skips it.
If you drive a Wrangler rather than a Grand Cherokee, the HomeLink situation is different. The Wrangler’s removable-door and removable-top architecture means many trims lack the auto-dimming mirror — and therefore HomeLink — entirely. It appears on upper Sahara and Rubicon trims with the mirror package, but not on Sport or Sport S.
Before you start
Two items to have on hand:
- The original gate remote. HomeLink copies the remote’s RF signal. Without the physical transmitter, step one cannot complete.
- Access to the gate operator’s control board. For any rolling-code opener — LiftMaster Security+ 2.0, Chamberlain, Genie Intellicode — you’ll need the LEARN button inside the motor housing at the gate post. Confirm you can reach it before walking the driveway.
Not sure which protocol your gate uses? Check the label on the original remote. “Security+ 2.0,” “SecurityPlus,” or “Intellicode” means rolling code. A plain, unlabeled remote without protocol text typically means fixed code.
Clearing existing channels
Before programming, clear the channel you plan to use. Hold the two outer HomeLink buttons simultaneously for about 20 seconds until the LED transitions from a slow blink to a rapid flash. Release as soon as the flash speeds up. All three channels clear at once.
To clear only one channel, hold that button alone for 10 seconds until its LED flashes rapidly, then release.
Programming a fixed-code gate (one step)
Older gate operators without rolling-code protocol store a static signal. Training requires one step:
- Hold the original remote 1–3 inches from the mirror buttons, angled upward toward the housing.
- Press and hold both the desired HomeLink channel button and the remote button simultaneously.
- Hold until the LED changes from slow blink to rapid flash. Release immediately.
Test the channel at the gate. If it moves, training is complete.
Programming a rolling-code gate (two steps)

Step one — capture the signal:
Same as fixed-code: hold the remote 1–3 inches from the buttons, press both simultaneously, hold until the rapid flash, release.
Step two — sync at the gate control board:
- Go to the gate operator housing at the gate post. The LEARN button sits on the main control board inside.
- Press and release the LEARN button once. The board’s indicator LED will light for 30 seconds.
- Within those 30 seconds, return to the Grand Cherokee and press the programmed HomeLink channel button three times, holding each press for about 2 seconds.
- The gate cycling — a brief travel and stop — confirms enrollment completed.
A long driveway creates a practical problem here: the 30-second window closes before most people can walk from the gate back to the car. Having a second person at the car, or using the key fob to lock and return quickly, keeps the timing manageable.
Troubleshooting
LED flashed rapidly but the gate doesn’t respond. Rolling-code sync was skipped or timed out. Go to the gate operator and repeat step two. The LEARN window is 30 seconds — timed from when you press the button, not from when you start walking.
Gate responds from close but not from the street. The mirror-mounted HomeLink module has a clear forward path through the windshield, but long driveways — over 100 feet from the street to the gate operator — can push against the useful range of 315 MHz transmission. Move the vehicle 30–50 feet closer and retest. Many gate installers can add a small external antenna to the control board’s receiver input to extend its effective range at the gate end.
Trained and working, but stopped after a few days. Rolling-code counter drift. The original remote and the gate operator stay in sync by incrementing a shared counter on each button press. Vehicle battery replaced and HomeLink stopped. Grand Cherokee HomeLink generally retains its programming through a battery swap — the code is stored in the mirror module, not in main vehicle memory. If channels are empty after a battery change, the enrollment was likely already marginal and a reset cleared it. Repeat the full two-step process.
When the button approach creates ongoing friction
For a standard residential driveway gate at typical range, HomeLink on the Grand Cherokee handles it reliably once both enrollment steps are done correctly. The friction tends to compound when circumstances stack: multiple vehicles on the same gate, a gate control board deep inside a long driveway, or a Security+ 2.0 opener with a short counter window.
